4.3.2. Hepatitis B virus infection
The transmission of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection can occur between individuals, whereas it is estimated that between 6–10% of the worldwide cases liver transplantation are linked to hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection (Vazquez et al., 2000). Hepatitis B virus infections are also found among infants born of HBV infected mothers, and even mothers who do not contract HBV may transmit it during birth and throughout life (Herzog, 2001).
In general, hepatitis B virus infection appears to be associated with poor outcomes in patients severe hepatitis B and in the elderly, including cirrhosis of liver (Wang et al., 2008). This is probably because some of the protective effect against HBeAgs is due to HBeAg-mediated immune-mediated immunity [reviewed in (Meng and Shetler, 2009)]. However, this relationship is unknown in the younger age groups. Therefore, HBV may play a role in liver injury and progression, particularly after hepatectomy (Crawley et al., 2004).
4.3.3. Hepatitis C
Hepatitis C (HCV) infection is the second most common form of infectious disease, following HIV. It is transmitted through the blood or other body fluids and is not transmitted through sexual intercourse (CDC, 2013). There is a growing focus on Hepatitis C prevention, control, diagnosis, and treatment.
4.3.3.1. Hepatitis C virus in blood and semen
Despite the huge increase in number of sexual partners and the number of new infections, incidence HCV infection is still high and, in many instances, the rates of disease progression remain high as well [for epidemiological studies: CDC (2013) and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (2006)]. This has led to
zovirax tabletten prijs a focus on the prevention, prevention of sexual transmission HCV, zovirax 200 mg tablets treatment infected patients with antiviral drugs and prevention of transmission HCV through medical care [for further explanation: Mokhtarian, 2011].
4.3.3.2. Transmission through sexual intercourse
There are a number of factors which facilitate the transmission of HCV through sexual intercourse. Firstly, the mucous membranes cover most of the body surface men and women, HSV strains have evolved around this mucous membrane (CDC, 2013). Secondly, the genital tract and skin are very accessible to viruses, particularly during sexual penetration. Thirdly, sex acts, such as vaginal intercourse, are more likely to result in sexual contact with the mouth or anus after sexual act, which facilitates the transmission of infections due to the consumption of a common substance, water (CDC, 2013). Furthermore, due to the increased use of dental dams, the mouth or anus are commonly accessible during sexual acts. Finally, the skin itself is entry location of more than 30 types virus, which in turn provides more opportunities for exposure of other body sites, such as the genitals, anus, or mouth at the time of sexual act (CDC (2013).
4.3.3.3. HCV infections in children's skin
Studies of HCV in babies and toddlers children's skin reveal few cases of HCV infection in infants (Tsukamoto et al., 2006), but an increasing number of cases HBV infection. This has led many countries, such as Australia, Japan and New Zealand, to develop guidelines prevent HCV infection in young children and to treat their infected mother or child. The guidelines recommend prevention and control of HCV infections by reducing alcohol consumption and sexual activity, providing antiretroviral treatment, and improving hygiene, among other things (CDC (2013).
4.3.3.4. Hepatitis B infection at birth
Hepatitis B virus infection in newborns is relatively common both globally and within specific geographic regions, with newborn infants in the UK having a risk of HCV-1, HCV-2 and HBV infection similar to that of infants in some other developing countries (CDC, 2013 and references therein).
4.3.3.5. Hepatitis C in newborns within the first year of life
There is a high risk of HCV infection in infants during their first year of life if they are born to a mother with chronic HBV infection (Waldstetter et al., 2001). Some studies (Herzog et al., 2007) show that the risk of infection increases with the onset of chronic HBV infection, with the risk in neonates being on average 4–24 times higher than the risk of infection in older babies. However, there are a number of possible explanations for any increase in the risk of infection, such as a protective effect of HBV on the.
